Seasonal Ayurvedic Ritual Oils

Warmth, nourishment and caring touch for your skin, your body and yourself.

If your skin is dry, your body feels tired or you find it difficult to settle at the end of the day, warm oil massage has so much to offer.

In Ayurveda, Abhyanga - the practice of massaging the body with warm oil - is part of daily care for nourishment, strength and healthy ageing. It is a practice you can return to throughout your life, adapting it to the season and to what your body needs.

Traditionally, regular abhyanga is valued for:

- Softening dry, rough skin and improving its smoothness and suppleness.

- Relieving fatigue, especially after physical effort.

- Balancing Vata, bringing warmth and nourishment to its cold, dry and restless qualities.

- Promoting sound sleep, making oil massage a beautiful addition to your evening routine.

- Nourishing the body’s tissues and supporting strength and firmness.

- Building resilience to physical exertion, helping the body tolerate the demands of daily life.

- Supporting healthy ageing and longevity, through regular nourishment and care.

These traditional benefits are described in the Ashtanga Hridaya and Charaka Samhita, two foundational Ayurvedic texts.

This is why I love sharing this practice. You are caring for your skin, supporting your body and creating a daily rhythm of nourishment, all through warm oil and your own hands.

Some days, you might have twenty minutes. Other days, just enough time to massage your feet before bed. There is room for both.

Your Ritual:

Awaken the Body, Nourish with Warm Oil

This ritual brings together gentle dry massage, using a natural-bristle brush or raw silk Garshana gloves, followed by warm oil abhyanga.

Dry massage offers an enlivening beginning. Warm oil massage follows with softness, warmth and nourishment.

You can enjoy both steps or begin directly with oiling, especially when your skin feels dry or sensitive. Let the practice respond to you.

Step One: Dry Massage with a Brush or Garshana Gloves

When you feel heavy, sluggish or slow to get going, a few minutes of gentle dry massage can be a lovely way to begin.

The friction helps remove dead skin cells, leaving your skin feeling smoother. It also brings a noticeable feeling of warmth and wakefulness to the surface of your body.

Choose either raw silk Garshana gloves or a natural-bristle body brush. A brush generally feels more stimulating, while silk gloves offer softer friction and allow your hands to follow the contours of your body.

Begin at your feet and move upward with light, steady strokes. Use long movements along your arms and legs, and gentle circles around your joints. Across your abdomen, move softly in a clockwise direction.

You are looking for a pleasant feeling of warmth. Keep the pressure gentle and avoid broken, irritated, inflamed or sunburned skin.

A few minutes is enough. When you finish, pause and notice how your skin and body feel. Then continue with your warm oil massage.

Step Two: Abhyanga with Warm Oil

Now, give yourself time to soften.

Warm the amount of oil you plan to use in a small container set in a bowl of warm water. It should feel comfortably warm against your skin.

Pour a little into your palms, rub your hands together and begin.

Use long, unhurried strokes along your arms and legs, and circular movements around your joints. Massage your abdomen gently in a clockwise direction. Give your hands, feet and any tired areas a little extra attention.

You do not need a perfect massage technique. Move slowly enough to feel the contact and notice how your body responds.

In Sanskrit, SNEHA carries the meanings of both oil and love. It is such a beautiful way to understand this practice: nourishment offered through your own caring hands with LOVE.

If you have time, let the oil rest on your skin for 10–20 minutes before taking a warm shower or bath. Stay comfortably warm while you wait.

A Little Extra Care for Your Feet

Your feet carry you through every day, and Ayurveda gives them special attention.

Traditional foot oil massage, called padabhyanga, is valued for relieving roughness, dryness, stiffness and fatigue, while supporting strength and steadiness in the feet.

On an evening when a full massage feels like too much, sit down, warm a little oil between your palms and massage your feet. Take your time with the soles, heels and toes.

Put on socks afterward and enjoy that simple feeling of having cared for yourself.

Move carefully after oiling, as your feet and the shower surface may be slippery.

The Seasonal Collection

Ayurveda teaches us to notice the qualities around us and respond with what brings balance.

When the weather is cold and dry, we welcome warmth and nourishment. When we feel heavy and slow, we invite movement. When life feels overheated or demanding, we make room for cooling and softness.

Each seasonal blend is created with this understanding, bringing together herbs and aromas chosen to accompany your abhyanga practice.

SPRING AWAKENING

Spring Ritual Body Oil

Lightness · Movement · Clarity · Renewal

There is a moment in spring when the light returns and we feel ready to begin again. Yet the body may still feel a little heavy or slow after winter.

Spring Awakening brings a fresh, enlivening quality to your ritual, lovely when you want to welcome movement and feel more awake in your body.

Infused with Tulsi, Calendula, Brahmi and Rosemary, the blend combines warming, aromatic plants with gentle botanical care.

Tulsi and rosemary bring an invigorating quality. Calendula offers care for the skin, while Brahmi adds a quieter, more settling element.

Grapefruit, geranium and lavender essential oils create a fresh, lightly floral aroma: bright citrus, soft floral notes and the familiar comfort of lavender.

Enjoy it after a gentle dry massage and before a warm shower, as an invitation to meet the day.

For the mornings when you are ready to get moving and would appreciate a gentle beginning.

Spring Awakening Intention

May this oil remind you to welcome fresh beginnings, awaken your vitality, and move through spring with lightness, clarity, and joy.

HEART GLOW

Summer Ritual Body Oil

Soften · Cool · Nourish · Receive

Summer can be beautiful and full. Longer days, more activity, more time outside and sometimes more giving than we quite have energy for.

Heart Glow invites you to pause and receive a little care yourself.

Infused with Rose, Shatavari and Calendula, this blend is inspired by Ayurveda’s cooling and nourishing approach to summer. Rose brings its traditional association with cooling, softness and the heart. Shatavari is treasured in Ayurveda for its nourishing qualities, particularly within care for women. Calendula adds its gentle, skin-loving character.

Geranium, lavender, frankincense and sandalwood essential oils create a soft floral aroma with a quiet, grounding depth.

Enjoy it as a slow massage at the end of your day. Let your hands soften, your breath become easy and your pace slow down.

For the days when you would love a little tenderness and space to receive.

Heart Glow Intention

May this oil remind you to soften, rest deeply, and move through summer with ease, radiance, and an open heart.

GROUNDED CALM

Fall Ritual Body Oil

Ground · Warm · Nourish · Restore

When the air becomes cooler and drier, you may notice it in your skin first. Perhaps your thoughts feel busier, your days less settled, or it takes a little longer to unwind at night.

In Ayurveda, fall is associated with Vata.

Warm oil massage offers qualities that balance its dryness, coldness and movement.

Grounded Calm is infused with Ashwagandha, Bala and Brahmi. Ashwagandha is traditionally valued for its strengthening and restorative qualities. Bala, whose name means strength, is associated with nourishment and support. Brahmi brings a traditional connection with mental quietude and balance.

Lavender, frankincense and sweet orange essential oils give the blend a comforting aroma, with soft herbal notes, gentle depth and a little citrus brightness.

Warm it before applying, give your feet some extra attention and allow this ritual to become a familiar part of your evening.

For the days when life feels fast and your body is asking for warmth, steadiness and rest.

Grounded Calm Intention

May this oil remind you to slow down, feel the ground beneath you, and move through fall with warmth, steadiness, and trust.

DEEP NOURISH

Winter Ritual Body Oil

Warm · Replenish · Protect · Restore

In winter, warmth can feel like nourishment in itself.

Cold air, indoor heating and full schedules can leave the skin feeling dry and the body longing for a slower pace. Deep Nourish is created for those moments when you want your ritual to feel especially comforting.

Infused with Ashwagandha, Bala and dried ginger root, this blend brings together herbs traditionally associated with nourishment, strength and warmth. Ashwagandha and Bala contribute their restorative character, while ginger adds a warming quality that suits the colder months.

Frankincense, lavender and sweet orange essential oils create a peaceful, gently uplifting aroma, something lovely to return to at the beginning or the end of a winter day.

Apply with slow strokes, stay warm while the oil rests on your skin and enjoy a warm shower or bath afterward.

For the days when you feel cold, dry or tired and a little extra nourishment would feel good.

Deep Nourish Intention

May this oil remind you to honour your need for rest, receive deep nourishment, and move through winter with warmth, comfort, and quiet strength.

Guided by the Season. Chosen by You.

The season offers guidance, and your own experience helps you make the choice.

You may want grounding in spring, softness in autumn or deeper nourishment after a demanding summer.

Before you reach for your oil, take a moment to ask:

How do I feel today?

What would feel nourishing?

Perhaps you need warmth. Perhaps a fresh, uplifting scent appeals to you.

Perhaps you simply want a few quiet minutes after a day spent caring for everyone else.

Let that be your starting point.

Over time, this pause becomes part of the practice: noticing what you need and responding with care.

Handcrafted in Small Batches

Each Play & Pause seasonal oil is prepared in a small batch, with plants chosen intentionally for the qualities of the season.

Essential oils are added in gentle, balanced combinations so the herbs, the oil and your own caring touch remain at the heart of the experience.

My hope is that these oils become something you enjoy reaching for, a familiar part of caring for your skin, nourishing your body and feeling more at home in yourself.

For external use only.

Patch test before your first full-body application. Avoid contact with the eyes and do not apply to broken or irritated skin.
