When the Season Changes Before We Are Ready

September 21, 20263 min read

Here in North America, we always seem to want summer to last longer than it does.

Then a few weeks ago we had a hailstorm in Toronto, followed by several cloudy days with very little sun. It felt like the weather changed its mind overnight. I caught myself wishing I could simply move somewhere along a warm coast and skip the colder seasons altogether.

But the sudden change also reminded me that fall is already approaching, whether or not I feel ready for it.

Seasonal transitions can be beautiful, but they can also feel unsettling. The mornings become cooler. The light changes. Our schedules become fuller after summer, and we may notice that the rhythm that worked only a few weeks ago no longer supports us in quite the same way.

In Ayurveda, fall carries qualities that are cool, light, dry, and changeable. We can see them around us in the wind and shifting weather, but we may also begin to feel them within ourselves. The mind can become busier, sleep may feel lighter, and digestion less predictable. We may feel tired in the morning yet strangely energetic in the evening.

When we feel unsettled, we often respond by trying to reorganize everything at once. We create a new schedule, change our diet, begin a new program, and promise ourselves that this time we will be perfectly consistent.

But steadiness is rarely created through urgency.

It often begins with something small: choosing a warm breakfast instead of a cold one, holding a cup of tea with both hands, massaging a little oil into the feet before bed, eating an earlier evening meal when possible, or taking a conscious pause between finishing one task and beginning the next.

That pause can be very simple.

When you finish answering an email, folding the laundry, preparing a meal, or driving home, stop for a moment before moving on. Take two or three slow breaths. Notice what you can hear. Feel your feet on the floor. Look around and allow yourself to arrive where you already are.

We sometimes imagine that we need a completely different life in order to feel less tired or overwhelmed. But perhaps what is missing is not always more time. Perhaps we need more moments in which we are fully present for the life we already have.

As we move into fall, you might ask yourself:

What is one small practice that would help me feel more grounded and steady this season?

You do not need a long list. Choose one small ritual that feels realistic enough to repeat.

For me, this season is an invitation to return to warmth, rhythm, and the practices that help us feel at home in our bodies.

This is the inspiration behind GROUNDED CALM, my Fall Ritual Oil, which I am preparing in a small batch for October. Its name reflects the qualities of steadiness, stability, and grounding, qualities many of us naturally need as the world around us becomes cooler and more changeable.

I am also preparing a Five-Day Autumn Reset for October, which I will offer first as a pilot experience to my subscribers. It will include simple seasonal recipes, supportive daily rhythms, and two Zoom gatherings.

This Reset is a gentle opportunity to simplify for a few days, reconnect with yourself, and notice what helps you feel calmer, more nourished, and settled.

For now, perhaps begin with one pause...

Let the exhale become a little longer. Feel the ground underneath you. Notice the season changing, and give yourself permission to change with it gently.
